DIY Tutorial For A Pillow Makeover

I've recently been searching for inexpensive ways to replace my existing couch pillows.  These pillows are not very old so I really didn't want to get rid of them, maybe just a new look.  My mom told me about a blog on Pinterest where they wrap a pillow in fabric and tie it, making it a quick and easy no sew project.  I was so excited to try this out as I didn't want to take the time to sew...sorry Mom, I realize how that statement might disappoint.  Have I mentioned my mom is an amazing seamstress?

Before the makeover-

So off to Joann's Fabric I went, picked out the fabric, raced home only to realize I had not bought enough fabric.  Communication between myself and the lady behind the cutting counter fell short, and so did my fabric:(  A lesson learned here is to pay better attention to their measurements and not multitask!

What was I going to do now with these beautiful pieces of fabric?  Deep down, I knew.  I dug out my sewing machine.  What fabric I did have was exactly enough to sew together for each pillow.  I will do my very best to walk you through, step by step, the simplest way to cover your existing pillows.

Measure your pillows before going to the fabric store, just be sure to add a few inches to those measurements to give room for seams.

Lay your fabric flat, print side up.  (Remember this will be inside out when sewn together, you will turn it print side out when they are finished.)

Next you will create a tri-fold with the fabric.  They will not be exact thirds, as the longer third of fabric will overlay slightly on top of the shorter third of fabric.  The middle third of fabric should measure the same as the pillow you are covering.   (So sorry for these horrible directions)

The side that is shortest you will fold back the edge about three inches.  (Maybe more or less depending on the size of the pillow)

Fold back the edge on the other side about three inches as well.

Next, you will pin the sides so that they hold in place while you sew.

Based on the measurements of your pillow you will need to mark how wide to make your cover.  Once you've made that measurement take a pencil and draw a line along the pins so you will know exactly where to sew.

Sew directly over the line.

When you are finished sewing, turn your pillow case print side out and slip your pillow through the slats you left open.

The finished product!

Please let me know if you have any questions!  I'd be happy to elaborate on any step necessary!  I'm hoping to improve in time with these tutorials;)

I would also love to see your DIY pillow covers so send me pictures!!!

Happy Friday everyone!!!
